J: Uh...why?
Me: Cause it'd just be cool to mix and loop and stuff.
J: ...
Me: Plus I can rock the giant headphones look.
J: How about you master the ukulele first and then maybe start thinking about the synthesizer?
Me : *sigh
Just another Friday night conversation coming after seeing my favorite boys from SF, Geographer. They've got a new album out and it's good! Frontman, Mike Deni explains the concept behind Myth, "The album's about the myths that people live by so they can cope with their lives. That was a very powerful idea to me." This is just one of the many reasons that I like them so much. Other reasons? They make my running easier, there's an electric cello, Mike uses a synthesizer, I could go on and on. Check it out and if you like...go see them on tour!
Other cool things happening revolve around film festivals. I recently saw The Island President at Portland's International Film Festival. It's a really informative documentary about the Maldive's (Maldivian?) president and his struggle to save his country from the effects of climate change. The Maldives are a pretty popular honeymoon spot because it's beachy and oceany and beautiful (noted!), but it's only 8 feet above sea level at its highest point. So as the sea level rises, these islands are going to be the first to go under. Yikes. That's why President Mohamed Nasheed is trying to get everyone (you know, China, India, and the US) on board with reducing carbon emissions and facing the energy challenge in a responsible way. No easy feat, but the man is so optimistic. It's really quite inspiring. Not only was I excited to see this film based on my interest in the world's climate, but it was a chance to support the sound/photo guy for the film, Yosemite friend, Lincoln! If he makes it back to the Maldives somehow I need to convince him to take me. I'm really good at holding boom mics and reflectors (just ask Rachel Ray). If it's playing near you, I recommend! It's thought provoking (if you're not provoked about the state of our planet already).
If you like Film Festivals, keep reading. How about My Morning Jacket? Are you going to be in LA at the end of the month? Do you want to support the hard work and effort of one really uber-talented, nice, hilarious guy (and former drummer of My Morning Jacket)? Yes to any, all, some of these? Guetig's documentary film One Big Holiday is going to play at the LA Film + Music Weekend. Get the deets.
It's cool to be at this time in life when big things are happening to good people. The aforementioned are just a few examples of what I get to witness daily, because a lot of my friends are doing a lot of pretty cool things. It's awesome to see projects completed, goals achieved, all this time and energy made into something great. I will shamelessly promote because that's what friends are for. I'm sooo happy that all the hard work paid off and the vision in your head has become a reality. Keep on rockin', mis amigos. I'm behind you all the way!
